We were able to spend the day at Adventure Aquarium this past weekend and had a great time with our family. Adventure Aquarium is located in Camden, right across the Ben Franklin Bridge from Philadelphia. It is an easy drive from anywhere in New Jersey with its location right off of Interstate 95.
We picked the coldest (negative 20 degree wind chills) of days to go and that leads me to my first travel tip for you. Be prepared, the parking lot is quite a distance from the entrance to the aquarium, so if you are going in rain or very cold weather just prepare ahead of time. We brought our stroller with us so bundling extra layers on for the walk inside wasn’t an issue because we had plenty of storage for them in the stroller. You can also buy your tickets online so you don’t need to wait outside to purchase them.
Once inside the aquarium we had a blast looking at all of the fish, sharks, hippo and more! Of course our 3 year old loved it, but even our 8 month old was completely occupied just looking at the fish swimming in the tanks. We were even able to watch the dive show and see the divers swimming with sharks. There are several “touch a tanks” that we enjoyed visiting; our older son was able to touch sting rays and starfish on his own. It was amazing to watch how interested he was in learning about the sea life we saw at the aquarium at such a young age. The staff at Adventure Aquarium were so enthusiastic when talking to him which definitely made the experience even better. There are several other shows and feeding times so be sure to check their schedule before your visit and plan ahead!
We took a break and ate our lunch in the cafeteria which we found to be surprisingly clean despite the number of people in there. We brought our own small cooler of food since we have so many dietary restrictions, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t still drooling over their food options!
Next, we headed to the gift shop, smooshed our souvenir pennies and headed home. Here are a few more tips that will be helpful in planning your trip:
-Bring a stroller if you have little ones, there was plenty of space to push it around and who doesn’t love the convenience of being able to put all of your bags and coats in a stroller.
-Parking is $10, cash only
– If you’re taking I-95 to get there and return home be prepared to pay a $5 toll on the way home to cross the Ben Franklin Bridge
– Try to visit on a weekday if at all possible, the Saturday we visited was very crowded and we did have to miss a few exhibits due to the crowds.
-Plan to let your little ones explore the top floor which is full of toddler friendly play features and sea life exhibits.
-Their penny smooshing- that’s what we call them 😉 ONLY accept dollar bills, so make sure you bring some of those rather than loose change
