I’ve been excitedly waiting for the chance to do some at home DIY newborn photos (I know, typical momtographer over here!) and yesterday was finally the right time! To prepare for the photos I purchased some cute wraps, fake furs and posing blankets from Amos & Sawyer and had some of my crocheted stuff from The Knotty Sisters ready to go.
I chose to shoot them in our office/playroom since there is one large window I was able to use for natural light. I set up a beanbag and layered the posing blanket over it then clipped the blanket to some tall shelves in our playroom. Opposite the side of the window I placed my reflector. I typically would have used my 50mm lens but the room is so tiny and on my crop sensor DSLR I just couldn’t fit it so I went with my 24mm lens.
Here are a few tips to keep baby asleep during the photos:
– Make sure he is well fed- Keep the room warm, as in you need to be sweating while taking the photos- keep the blankets and props warm with a heating pad- use a sound machine for some white noise
-Always manually select your focal point! I try to choose the center on my camera because it is the best for getting the most in focus shots. Then aim that focal point on the baby’s eye that is closest to you.
I’m clearly no pro but I love taking photos and getting practice. Here’s how they turned out!
