We’ve been in our ‘forever’ home for just over 3 years now and during that time we’ve completed most of our indoor renovations and a few of our exterior renovations like white washing the brick, painting doors and upgrading our patios. When we moved in to this home I had big dreams of painting the brick white and just about everything else white (have you seen the inside of our home?) It wasn’t long before my husband put an end to my dreams of an all white exterior. We compromised on a white washed brick exterior and I love it! We recently upgraded our garage doors and it really made our home come together with a cohesive look.
The original garage doors that were on our home were probably pretty awesome when it was built in the mid 80’s, however they are very dated now and they also did not function. So, we knew it was finally time to tackle the garage door upgrade.
Here is a photo from the listing when we purchased our home. You can see the exterior needed a lot of love!

We began our garage door shopping at The Home Depot because they offer an extensive selection of doors at a reasonable price. They also offer installation services, which was something we were definitely interested in. We typically DIY all of our renovations, but we decided to leave this job up to the professionals.
The process of picking out our new doors and ordering them through The Home Depot was very easy. We sat down in their store after viewing the samples they had and made our choices. We chose to add hardware and new tracks and door openers. We could even view a mock up of our doors before placing our final order. We went with the highest quality 18.4R doors, which means they are insulated and thick. We have a heated garage so this was an important factor in deciding to go with the most insulated doors. I can’t wait to see how much warmer it is in the garage this winter with our new doors.
Originally I wanted to have white garage doors and we had planned to paint the vinyl above the garage doors white (there I go again with my dreams of an all white exterior!). That tan color was just all wrong to me! However and thankfully so, my husband talked me into getting dark wood garage doors. This was the best decision ever; the transformation from white garage doors to the wood is just unbelievable. It’s like our house just went up in value instantly. They came out amazing and completely transformed the exterior.
I mentioned earlier that I had planned to paint the vinyl white; I even purchased this awesome paint sprayer from The Home Depot to get the job done.
But, after the new wood doors were installed it was very obvious to me that white vinyl would not look good on the home. We decided to keep the vinyl the tan color that it was since it looks 100% better now with the new garage doors. I do plan to keep the paint sprayer and use it for some other projects around the house such as re-painting our kitchen cabinets. I had previously painted them with a brush before realizing a sprayer would work much better for cabinets. I’ll keep you updated on that project when it happens!
After the doors were installed we completed a few other small projects to enhance the curb appeal of our home such as purchasing new planters, adding mulch and new shrubs to our yard. Here is a little sneak peak at the final results.
I just love how they turned out so much! All of our friends and family who have come over since they were installed have been amazed at how they transformed the exterior of the home. It’s really incredible what switching garage doors can do to a home! I can’t wait for you to see the full reveal! You can read the full review of our renovation here:
